Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral and experienced researchers

The Humboldt Research Fellowship is available to scientists across all fields and countries. We assist you in conducting research in Germany.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports researchers with above-average qualifications from throughout the world through the Humboldt Research Fellowship. As a fellow, you will have access to our wide range of sponsorship opportunities as well as personalized support from the Humboldt Foundation.

Looking ahead to the upcoming meetings of the selection committee, we expect that 20–25% of the applications received will be approved.

Postdocs

If you’re starting your academic career and looking for research sponsorship opportunities in Germany, consider the Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers. This program offers the chance to conduct research in Germany with a monthly fellowship amount of €2,670. The fellowship duration can range from 6 to 24 months.

Experienced researchers

Even if you are already well into your academic career, you can still apply for research sponsorship in Germany. The Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers allows you to conduct research in Germany, with a fellowship amount of €3,170. The fellowship can last from 6 to 18 months and can be divided into up to three stays within a period of three years.

 

Throughout your sponsorship, you will get individual assistance in addition to the fellowship money. When you decide to begin your fellowship, it is entirely up to you. You and your spouse will have the opportunity to take an intensive language course prior to beginning your research fellowship.

Additional financial assistance is also provided, such as complete health insurance subsidies, travel expenditure allowances, and family benefits for spouses and children.

Eligibility

Postdocs: Have you finished your PhD, or any other comparable degree, in the last four years? Or are you only six months away from finishing your Ph.D. and have a written synopsis of your research available already? Have you had publications accepted for publication by multinational publishing houses and published in scholarly journals? If yes, submit an application for the Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers if you meet the requirements listed in the “What is required of you” section.

Experienced researchers: Have you finished your PhD, or any other comparable degree, in the previous 12 years? Does your academic record include a long list of publications in scholarly journals and from publishing houses that undergo international quality control? If this is the case and you meet the requirements listed in the “What is required of you” section, submit an application for the experienced researcher Humboldt Research Fellowship.
You can still apply up to 16 years after earning your master’s or other postgraduate degree if a doctorate in your area or country of origin is not feasible or common, as long as your publication history is in line with your professional level.
