Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

This prize honors outstanding incoming foreign undergraduate candidates who exhibit remarkable academic success and leadership qualities that uplift others through teamwork, empathetic listening, and active participation. It honors students who have excelled in other academic or extracurricular activities while also having made a positive difference via their participation in a variety of school and community service projects and initiatives.

Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

This prize honors exceptional foreign undergraduate students from underdeveloped or conflict-torn regions who have excelled academically despite difficult circumstances and who would not be able to attend college without substantial financial aid. Students should have leadership potential as well as a genuine desire to improve their communities.

International Impact Award

This honor is given to outstanding students who have shown leadership qualities, dedication to protecting the environment, preserving natural resource use, promoting social justice, equity, and inclusion, or promoting societal health and wellbeing. First-generation students and those with different racial or ethnic backgrounds are given preference.

Vantage One Excellence Award

For academically exceptional overseas students who do not yet achieve the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC, UBC Vantage College offers this scholarship. The prizes come in a variety of amounts that might cover all of a student’s tuition, fees, and living expenses. The ability to lead others, actively participate in student life and volunteer work, and achieve distinction in other academic and extracurricular activities are all requirements for students.

eligibility for the Program

  • You must hold a Canadian study permit to study in Canada as an international student.
  • You must have graduated from a recognized secondary school or completed your first year at a post-secondary college or university to attend UBC. You must have graduated from high school no earlier than one gap year prior to the academic year you are applying to. For example, applicants for the 2024 Winter session must have graduated from high school no earlier than November 2022.
  • You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standards).
  • To be eligible for financial aid at UBC, you need to demonstrate that you have a financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a degree. UBC offers merit-based scholarships, such as the International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards, to all international students. The maximum value of these scholarships is $35,000 per year. However, if this amount does not cover your tuition and basic living expenses, you are eligible to apply for the International Scholars Program.
  • You must fulfill UBC’s admission requirements, which include general and degree-specific criteria, as well as an English Language Admission Standard.

We will consider you for the Vantage One Excellence Award if:

  • All previous eligibility criteria apply, except if you do not meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC.
  • You must fulfill UBC Vantage College’s English and admission requirements, directly from high school.
  • You must be beginning your undergraduate studies at UBC in the UBC Vantage One Program.
