Specific admission criteria

1. for international students

• preferred background: bachelor’s or master’s degree in (Applied) Physics/Photonics/Optics/Electrical Engineering/Materials Science or related
• bachelor or master’s degree in another scientific field will also be considered based on pre-knowledge

ALL international applicants must submit their initial application through the MSPE pre-admission platform. All files will be evaluated on academic background and excellence. Each applicant who meets the academic threshold will be invited for a technical interview. Only the applicants who pass the interview will be allowed to start the pre-enrolment process at VUB.

2. for Belgian degree holders

• bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical or (Applied) Physics Engineering/Materials Science have direct access
• Bachelor or master’s degree in Architecture, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, industrial Science – Electronics/ICT, Engineering Science, or KMS Polytechnical Department can apply for the preparatory program of 30 ECTS

Belgian degree holders can apply directly via the central admissions platform.

Are there any language requirements?

We accept the following proof of English language proficiency:

• A secondary school diploma from the Belgian educational system;
• A certificate from the institution where you completed secondary or higher education, stating that English was the language of instruction;
• A certificate of one of the following language tests corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference with minimum level B2:
  • TOEFL (internet-based test) with minimum level: 79
  • IELTS academic module, with a minimum level: of 6.5
  • Cambridge English minimum grade scale score of 170
  • ITACE with minimum level B2
• Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we realize it may be tricky to take a test in person. So, we also accept the TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition and the IELTS Indicator. These are variants of the classic TOEFL and IELTS tests that can be taken at home.
• This proof can be provided by presenting the results of a language test or documents issued by your home institution. Please note your language test results must not be older than 5 years at the moment of application.
