Promising postdoctoral scientists are encouraged through the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP) to do their own independent research that advances NASA astrophysics through theory, observation, experimentation, or instrument creation.
The NHFP upholds the heritage of earlier NASA postdoctoral fellowship initiatives.
Fellows who are chosen are placed in one of three subcategories that correspond to NASA’s “big questions”:

In cooperation with the Chandra X-ray Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) at the California Institute of Technology, the Space Telescope Science Institute manages the NHFP on behalf of NASA.

Subject to a limit of two new fellows per host institution per year and no more than five fellows at any one host institution, save for brief periods of overlap, NHFP fellowships may be held at U.S. host institutions of the fellow’s choosing. The fellowship may last up to three years, with a one-year initial appointment and two annual renewals pending good performance and NASA funding availability.
